Last autumn I repaired my Tractor after it had gone off the frame. I welded and tried to do it properly. Unfortunately, the repair did not keep the whole winter, but almost. I had welded too badly but now I have done about it and reinforced even more so I hope it will hold for a wild!
OLD AGRICULTURAL TRACTOR
The tractor is an old agricultural tractor from the 1960´s, a Volvo BM Boxer 350. Even though it’s so old, it works very well. However, you may expect to repair quite a lot when it is so old. For our little homestead, it is not worth buying a new tractor. I believe that if you try living a more sustainable life, you should repair the things that you can repair. If it is not possible to repair, you can find other uses for it, which is why I have started with Blacksmithing. When you have a forge, you can do many tools and repairs yourself. When a tool has broken and cannot be repaired more, you can do something else such as a Knife.
As you can see from the picture it broke by the middle of the weld seam. I am too bad at welding. 🙁 I grinded off the old weld seam and started from scratch. After grinding clean, I used my welder and welded the crack together. Then I grinded again. I cut out a piece of 1/8 ” thick sheet of metal which I then welded over the weld seam as a reinforcement.
Here’s the end result! It is not beautiful but it works. Now I hope it will last all summer anyway. If I have time in the summer I’ll grind and paint with a red color to make it look better.
Now for the summer, we intend to build a small greenhouse so that we can grow some vegetables. We intend to grow cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and some spices. I think I may write a post about our summer planning next week!?
